Mike Ditka has a message for the NFL and congressional leaders: More action, not studies.
On the eve of a congressional hearing on head injuries among NFL players, the Hall of Famer sent a loud-and-clear message toward Capitol Hill and the league during a news conference in Chicago yesterday to announce that his Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund is expanding its medical program.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith are scheduled to testify before the House Judiciary Committee, along with former players and medical experts, and Ditka said he hoped they "come to a conclusion and quit financing these studies" so more ailing retirees can get the help they need.
Smith said the union has differences with the NFL over how to address head injuries suffered during pro football games, but they're not fighting about it.
Smith credited the NFL with doing a "tremendous job" to improve player safety in the last five years.
"This is not a battle between us and the league," Smith said.
In the past, Ditka has criticized the players' association for ignoring the medical needs of former players with serious injuries who can't afford to pay for their care. His stance has softened now that Smith is leading the union.
Is there any way to find out which referee (or officiating team) is scheduled to work a given NFL game in advance? The referee is often announced by the commentators at the beginning of the game, but I'm wondering if there is a list posted at the beginning of each week or at the beginning of the season.

Is Alabama playing the system knowing Michigan State is on the way down while they are on the way up?

I'm wondering when the awards are going to be announced for the year-end NFL awards, including league MVP, rookie of the year, coach of the year, and offensive and defensive players of the year. The Patriots season might quickly go down the drain if they keep playing like this, the Patriots schedule is very easy but Matt Cassel is struggling. Who can blame him, this is the first time he has been a starter since pop warner football when he was probably 10 years old.
But back to the question, i heard a week ago on NFL Total Access there might have been a possible trade situation for A.J. Feeley from the Eagles. I havn't heard anything since, but im guessing it isn't going to happen because Bellicheck hasn't announced anything.
I really think the Patriots should maybe try and trade for a decent back up QB, they're are a few out there. Sage Rosenfels for example, plays well for the whole game just lacks in the 4th quarter. The Patriots are a much better team then the Texans(in my opinion) so i think the Pats would be able to help him out in areas he lacks. Also, Brady Quinn could be a good idea if they where willing to sacrafice something great for him if they BELIEVE he could get them to the play-offs. I know you guys think the world revolves around Brady, but i still think the Pats have a shot at the play-offs this year.

NEW YORK (AP) -- After weeks of insisting they wouldn't cave in, NFL officials did just that Wednesday. Now all of America can see the Patriots' shot at history.
Saturday night's game between New England and the New York Giants on the NFL Network, which is available in fewer than 40 percent of the nation's homes with TVs, will be simulcast on CBS and NBC.
The Patriots could become the first NFL team to go 16-0 in the regular season.
"We have taken this extraordinary step because it is in the best interest of our fans," commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement after the league announced it was reversing course. "What we have seen for the past year is a very strong consumer demand for NFL Network. We appreciate CBS and NBC delivering the NFL Network telecast on Saturday night to the broad audience that deserves to see this potentially historic game. Our commitment to the NFL Network is stronger than ever."
NFL Network spokesman Seth Palansky said officials would have no further comment Wednesday.
The NFL had claimed that the onus of making the game widely available fell on the major cable providers with which the league has bitterly feuded. Companies such as Comcast and Time Warner have declined to carry the network as part of basic packages.
But lawmakers have pressured the NFL to ensure more viewers could see the game. Last week, two prominent members of the Senate Judiciary Committee sent a letter to Goodell threatening to reconsider the league's antitrust exemption.
Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., who co-wrote the letter with Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., said he was "delighted" by the NFL's concession.
"I think it was a smart move on their part," he said in a phone interview.
Leahy expected to speak with Goodell again next month about the ongoing question of how many fans will be able to see games on the channel. Saturday's matchup wraps up the NFL Network's second season of airing live contests, with eight per year. This one and a key Thursday night game between Green Bay and Dallas last month drew widespread complaints about the lack of availability.
"I never completely gave up hope, but I was getting a little discouraged Christmas afternoon when we still had not gotten a positive answer," said Leahy, who added that his staff members were talking with NFL officials during the holiday.
Local TV affiliates in the Boston, Manchester, N.H., and New York areas that were already set to simulcast the game under NFL policy will still air it. That means viewers in those markets will have four channels to choose from if they get NFL Network.
That did not make officials at WWOR in New York happy.
"The NFL is in clear violation of their agreement with WWOR/My9," the station said in a statement. "We fully expect the league to honor their commitment to My9 as the exclusive free over-the-air broadcaster for Saturday's telecast of the New England Patriots at New York Giants game."
Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., who had urged cable and NFL executives to settle the dispute, had a much more positive reaction to the league's announcement.
"I couldn't be more thrilled that as the Patriots rush toward an historic undefeated season, football fans everywhere have won a victory of their own," Kerry said. "With today's announcement, the NFL showed their loyalty to the sports fans who made the NFL an empire in the first place.
"The best news of all is that now no die-hard Pats fans will be shut out from watching their team take aim at football history," Kerry said in a statement.
This will be the first three-network simulcast in NFL history and the first simulcast of an NFL game since the inaugural Super Bowl in 1967, when CBS and NBC televised the meeting of the champions of the newly merged National Football League and American Football League.
"We're happy to accommodate the NFL's request for a joint national simulcast of this potentially historic game to make it available to the widest possible audience," said Dick Ebersol, NBC Universal's chairman for sports and Olympics.
NBC was scheduled to air "Dateline NBC" and a repeat of "Law & Order: SVU" during the time slot. CBS was set to broadcast the movie "Good Night, and Good Luck" and "48 Hours: Mysteries."

On the eve of a congressional hearing on head injuries among NFL players, the Hall of Famer sent a loud-and-clear message toward Capitol Hill and the league during a news conference in Chicago yesterday to announce that his Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund is expanding its medical program.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith are scheduled to testify before the House Judiciary Committee, along with former players and medical experts, and Ditka said he hoped they "come to a conclusion and quit financing these studies" so more ailing retirees can get the help they need.
Smith said the union has differences with the NFL over how to address head injuries suffered during pro football games, but they're not fighting about it.
Smith credited the NFL with doing a "tremendous job" to improve player safety in the last five years.
"This is not a battle between us and the league," Smith said.
In the past, Ditka has criticized the players' association for ignoring the medical needs of former players with serious injuries who can't afford to pay for their care. His stance has softened now that Smith is leading the union.

The Patriots season might quickly go down the drain if they keep playing like this, the Patriots schedule is very easy but Matt Cassel is struggling. Who can blame him, this is the first time he has been a starter since pop warner football when he was probably 10 years old.
But back to the question, i heard a week ago on NFL Total Access there might have been a possible trade situation for A.J. Feeley from the Eagles. I havn't heard anything since, but im guessing it isn't going to happen because Bellicheck hasn't announced anything.
I really think the Patriots should maybe try and trade for a decent back up QB, they're are a few out there. Sage Rosenfels for example, plays well for the whole game just lacks in the 4th quarter. The Patriots are a much better team then the Texans(in my opinion) so i think the Pats would be able to help him out in areas he lacks. Also, Brady Quinn could be a good idea if they where willing to sacrafice something great for him if they BELIEVE he could get them to the play-offs. I know you guys think the world revolves around Brady, but i still think the Pats have a shot at the play-offs this year.

NEW YORK (AP) -- After weeks of insisting they wouldn't cave in, NFL officials did just that Wednesday. Now all of America can see the Patriots' shot at history.
Saturday night's game between New England and the New York Giants on the NFL Network, which is available in fewer than 40 percent of the nation's homes with TVs, will be simulcast on CBS and NBC.
The Patriots could become the first NFL team to go 16-0 in the regular season.
"We have taken this extraordinary step because it is in the best interest of our fans," commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement after the league announced it was reversing course. "What we have seen for the past year is a very strong consumer demand for NFL Network. We appreciate CBS and NBC delivering the NFL Network telecast on Saturday night to the broad audience that deserves to see this potentially historic game. Our commitment to the NFL Network is stronger than ever."
NFL Network spokesman Seth Palansky said officials would have no further comment Wednesday.
The NFL had claimed that the onus of making the game widely available fell on the major cable providers with which the league has bitterly feuded. Companies such as Comcast and Time Warner have declined to carry the network as part of basic packages.
But lawmakers have pressured the NFL to ensure more viewers could see the game. Last week, two prominent members of the Senate Judiciary Committee sent a letter to Goodell threatening to reconsider the league's antitrust exemption.
Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., who co-wrote the letter with Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., said he was "delighted" by the NFL's concession.
"I think it was a smart move on their part," he said in a phone interview.
Leahy expected to speak with Goodell again next month about the ongoing question of how many fans will be able to see games on the channel. Saturday's matchup wraps up the NFL Network's second season of airing live contests, with eight per year. This one and a key Thursday night game between Green Bay and Dallas last month drew widespread complaints about the lack of availability.
"I never completely gave up hope, but I was getting a little discouraged Christmas afternoon when we still had not gotten a positive answer," said Leahy, who added that his staff members were talking with NFL officials during the holiday.
Local TV affiliates in the Boston, Manchester, N.H., and New York areas that were already set to simulcast the game under NFL policy will still air it. That means viewers in those markets will have four channels to choose from if they get NFL Network.
That did not make officials at WWOR in New York happy.
"The NFL is in clear violation of their agreement with WWOR/My9," the station said in a statement. "We fully expect the league to honor their commitment to My9 as the exclusive free over-the-air broadcaster for Saturday's telecast of the New England Patriots at New York Giants game."
Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., who had urged cable and NFL executives to settle the dispute, had a much more positive reaction to the league's announcement.
"I couldn't be more thrilled that as the Patriots rush toward an historic undefeated season, football fans everywhere have won a victory of their own," Kerry said. "With today's announcement, the NFL showed their loyalty to the sports fans who made the NFL an empire in the first place.
"The best news of all is that now no die-hard Pats fans will be shut out from watching their team take aim at football history," Kerry said in a statement.
This will be the first three-network simulcast in NFL history and the first simulcast of an NFL game since the inaugural Super Bowl in 1967, when CBS and NBC televised the meeting of the champions of the newly merged National Football League and American Football League.
"We're happy to accommodate the NFL's request for a joint national simulcast of this potentially historic game to make it available to the widest possible audience," said Dick Ebersol, NBC Universal's chairman for sports and Olympics.
NBC was scheduled to air "Dateline NBC" and a repeat of "Law & Order: SVU" during the time slot. CBS was set to broadcast the movie "Good Night, and Good Luck" and "48 Hours: Mysteries."

The main aim of the new standards is to give pupils healthy options. Deep-fried foods can only be served twice a week, sweet fizzy drinks are banned and at least one portion of fruit and one portion of vegetables must be served as part of lunch.
A sample menu from one school which has already implemented the changes is revealing. The main meals are chilli con carne served with fluffy brown rice (or, as a vegetarian alternative, fresh vegetable mornay bake with champ mashed potato). Christina Applegate says she has a clean bill of health after undergoing treatment for breast cancer.
"I'm clear," Applegate tells ABC News' "Good Morning America" in an interview airing Tuesday. "Absolutely 100 percent clear and clean. It did not spread. They got everything out, so I'm definitely not going to die from breast cancer."
The actress' publicist, Ame Van Iden, announced earlier this month that Applegate was being treated for the disease after it was detected through a doctor-ordered MRI.
"I was so mad," she says in the "GMA" interview when she first heard the news. "I was just shaking and -- and then also immediately, I had to go into ... `take-care-of-business-mode,' which was ... When I was little, maybe 5 years old, my grandpa came to me in a dream. He died in 1986, and I was born in 1994, so there was no chance I ever met him. The dream had remarkable detail, and he was wearing the outfit he wore a lot (I never had seen a photo of it) and I had a conversation with him.
I also have hyperactive senses. I can hear light, and my senses are strong. I have an amazing sense of smell. One time, my mom made a TV dinner, and I hadn't seen it. I was in the other room, and I smelled it as she was eating it. I wasn't facing her, and I said, "Okay mom, you're eating chicken. Oh, and I also smell broccoli, and Potatoes? Wait, you can have potatoes on your diet?" I walked into the room, and she said, "Look at the food in my container." I had guessed every single item by the smell from the other room.

Christina Applegate: I'm `100 percent' cancer free

Christina Applegate says she has a clean bill of health after undergoing treatment for breast cancer.
"I'm clear," Applegate tells ABC News' "Good Morning America" in an interview airing Tuesday. "Absolutely 100 percent clear and clean. It did not spread. They got everything out, so I'm definitely not going to die from breast cancer."
The actress' publicist, Ame Van Iden, announced earlier this month that Applegate was being treated for the disease after it was detected through a doctor-ordered MRI.
"I was so mad," she says in the "GMA" interview when she first heard the news. "I was just shaking and -- and then also immediately, I had to go into ... `take-care-of-business-mode,' which was ... I asked them, `What do I do now? What -- what is it that I do? I get a doctor, I get a surgeon, I get an oncologist? What do I do?'"
Applegate, 36, says she "immediately made those appointments and immediately called around for ... someone to start teaching me how to live macrobiotically." She was referring to following a healthy diet of fish, grains, beans and vegetables, and avoiding processed foods.
The actress, whose mother battled breast cancer, says she began getting mammograms at the age of 30.

I want to get a good GPS device. I want lane assist, lane assist street view similiar to navigon, announce streets and bluetooth. Voice commands would be neat but its not a priority. I probably would onl use the device in the states.
I've looked at the Garmin 1370t, 1490t
Magellan 4730 and 4700.
I seem to get a lot more bang for the buck with Magellan, but it always seems Garmin gets ranked higher even though I found the older Garmins had horrible sound and the screens were less vibrant then the Magellans.
What would you recommend?
The newly announced Iphone by Apple has once again created a product that everybody will be craving about. The Iphone 3G speed has many improved features over its predecessor. Having a better 3 megapixel camera which is able to shoot video is one example. But of course looking at other phones like the i8910, the camera is a joke. We have to put in mind that Apple is not really attracting its customers by releasing a new high-end device. Because no matter what the Iphone is not a high-end device. Apple has a way to sell its product in a more hypnotising way. It seems whatever Apple releases must be the best and definitely worth the upgrade. With new improved products coming out every 6 months, Apple has definilty found the way to sell what it wants. Now this is different in other countries like Russia or Japan and even Europe, the phone doesnt sell as much as in the US and even mac computers are not as used over there. Maybe everyone exept America has found that Apple is not the god of gadgets, and that there are better alternatives.
The Iphone though has sold like crazy and the App store is what to thank. Having just delivered 1 Billion downloads from it, it has definitly made the Iphone a popular device. Many companies now are opening up app stores for their platform. Nokia just released its app store called Ovi store which will let Symbian users download apps over the air like the Apple app store. You can even download specific apps based on your location. This is a nice feature but will probably effect only a small amount of apps. And even Ovi has a long way to go to even compete with Apple, but Symbian is the most used mobile platform in the world so they might have a chance to catch up.
The Samsung i8910 runs on Symbian which means that the Ovi store does run on it and you are able to download apps when connected to the internet. Samsung has also built its own app store but there is still some work to be done to make it fully functional (link).
So leta��s talk about the differences between the Samsung i8910 and the Iphone 3G S. One is made by Apple and the other by Samsung. Samsung has been making phones a lot longer then Apple and thus has more experience and knowledge with what people want. Apple has to but they are still a little behind.

Conclusion:
As you can see the Iphone still has a long way to start competing with European and Asian phones. The i8910 is better, cheaper at $650 unlocked which means that you can use it with T-Mobile and At&t. The only thing that I prefer over the i8910 is the fact that Iphone has multitouch and the app store. But in almost every other feature, the Samsung Omnia HD takes it away by a mile.

First there were security cameras, sprouting like mushrooms on street corners and buildings. Then came shopper cards, offering discounts in exchange for details about buying habits.
In recent years, we've seen the emergence of electronic tags or "cookies" on the Internet, software that monitors e-mail, GPS devices that pinpoint our position on the planet, and a growing number of machines that capture fingerprints and face prints.
Now comes the news that federal regulators approved the injection of microchips under the skin, enabling physicians with the right gear to know who someone is without having to ask. And yesterday, the omniscient-seeming search engine Google bested itself by announcing a service to probe for information both online and in your own machine. One company official called it a "photographic memory for your computer."
Google says no personal information will be sent back to the company. But if it feels like you can't do anything these days without someone looking over your shoulder, you're not just paranoid. Cheap computers, blazing fast networks and clever engineers are finding more and more ways to keep tabs on where you go and what you buy, generally with your permission. They're even getting better at guessing what you'll do next.
"It's this whole new world. It's sort of like all these little details about our lives are being recorded," said Richard M. Smith, an Internet security consultant in Boston. "We love the conveniences. We love the services. But people kind of instinctively know there's a dark side to this. They just hope it won't happen to them."
Smaller, Faster and Cheaper
To be sure, companies have long gathered personal and shopping information to better market to customers, often with dubious results. Who hasn't received junk mail or telemarketing calls that seem to have no connection with their lives? But those initiatives are fast improving' and accelerating as people live more of their lives tethered to cell phones, the Internet and the rest of the wired world, where trading off personal information is part of the price of admission.
Think about a typical day. An advertising service is notified when you check the sports scores on the Web. The EZ-Pass transponder signals when you go through a tollbooth. The pharmacy collects personal medication details and sends them along to data companies for analysis. At work, some employees now use face recognition systems to get in to their offices, or they type on machines that trace every keystroke.
"Every move you make is becoming part of your permanent record," said Peter P. Swire, a privacy expert and law professor at Ohio State University. "The trend is smaller, faster, cheaper."
Rapid Accumulation
There's no question the data are accumulating, and faster than many people understand. A few years ago, researchers at the University of California at Berkeley estimated that all the information created by humanity by 1999 would double by about now. One of the leading aggregators of personal information, an Arkansas company called Acxiom Corp., has roughly a million times more information about adult Americans and their families than when it first sold stock two decades ago.
Other commercial information services routinely tout their ability to access some 20 billion records. And that's not counting the digital details that come in the form of photographs, videotapes and sensor readings. Most people know companies can mine credit card data, loan records and other transactions. But few know that companies already offer video-mining services as well. One day we might be able to mine the information generated by radio frequency identification chip implanted in our arms. I know about N97 but what i am trying to say about a cell phone that will be superior to use between those two.
I am greatly disappointed. I bought the 3G, at launch, for it's GPS ability. At that time, TomTom, along with other companies, announced they would soon be releasing turn-by-turn software for the phone. Well, it's been a year and some stupid developer agreement for the iPhone SDK restricting GPS software. So why have a GPS chip on the iPhone 3G?! Anyways, back to the real question. Will the iPhone 3G ever get turn-by-turn nagivation software? Should I wait it out or just get smart phone with GPS and GPS software that's already available?

A 'leap second' will be added onto the final minute of 2008 because the planet is gradually slowing down as it spins on its axis.

It is the 24th time since 1972 that the adjustment has been made by the Paris based International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service at intervals varying from six months to seven years. The last was in 2005.
Historically, time was based on the rotation of the Earth relative to celestial bodies.
Earth's trip around the sun is about 365.2422 days long, which we round down to 365. Every four years, during a leap year, the inaccuracy is corrected by adding a day in February.
Mechanisms such as the Internet-based Network Time Protocol and the satellite-based Global Positioning System (GPS) depend on the accurate time kept by atomic clocks.
That extra second will make 2008 a�� already long with an extra day on Feb 29 a�� the longest year since 1992.
The decision to add an extra second was made by an international consortium of timekeepers, whose American arm announced the extension.

She went as far as to buy a mini van so it seats her 4 children, my baby and me. She's going to buy another car but she's keeping the mini van so that she can still take us everywhere with her!!!
It all started when my husband and I lived with her last year. She invited us to go to Steve and Barry's with her because it just opened and she didn't know how to get there so my husband drove and got us there in one piece. We since moved out of her place (almost a year ago) and she has invited us to the water park, fair, and aquarium. She has off two weekends per month and in my opinion, she should be using those days to clean the house and get the kids ready for school. Instead, she goes out with her boyfriend Saturday morning, calls us up by 1 pm and invites us somewhere or announces that she's bringing her kids over around dinner time.
I spoke with my husband about these frequent invitations and said that he's going to need to say something before she drives me insane. He said that he's just going to keep telling her we can't go and making excuses. The last place she invited us to is the fair. We didn't have to extra money because my husband's business is slow righ tnow so he told his mom that we're broke and can't go. How embarassing and none of her business! I wish he would just end this now and just tell her we have our own lives and our own family (we have a 10 month old baby!) to attend to.
I don't know if we're "supposed" to go with her out of pitty or if she's trying to manipulate us. She made comments on how we blow our money and how much of a waste it is to buy a GPS for the car. Well, every time she invites us somewhere, she has us bring the GPS because she doesn't 'have one and she has no idea where she's going! So this hypocritical monster in law is on my nerves!!! to buy for the baby. She lives with her boyfriend, who makes $17 an hour. They drive a brand new car. This is the deal. He says wait and see what everyone buys for them when they have a baby shower. I have decided I will buy ONE big ticket item, most likely a car seat/ stroller combo. But how do I get through to these kids that I am not going to be responsible for buying stuff and I do not want to be a convienient babysitter? I have a full-time job and 7 year as well. I don't want to make them mad and never see my grandchild.

I was driving an isolated mountain road near Zion National Park and my Tom Tom gps told me to make a right turn 100 feet ahead, that would have taken me flying off a killer of a cliff. I want to get a good GPS device. I want lane assist, lane assist street view similiar to navigon, announce streets and bluetooth. Voice commands would be neat but its not a priority. I probably would onl use the device in the states.
I've looked at the Garmin 1370t, 1490t
Magellan 4730 and 4700.
I seem to get a lot more bang for the buck with Magellan, but it always seems Garmin gets ranked higher even though I found the older Garmins had horrible sound and the screens were less vibrant then the Magellans.
What would you recommend?
The newly announced Iphone by Apple has once again created a product that everybody will be craving about. The Iphone 3G speed has many improved features over its predecessor. Having a better 3 megapixel camera which is able to shoot video is one example. But of course looking at other phones like the i8910, the camera is a joke. We have to put in mind that Apple is not really attracting its customers by releasing a new high-end device. Because no matter what the Iphone is not a high-end device. Apple has a way to sell its product in a more hypnotising way. It seems whatever Apple releases must be the best and definitely worth the upgrade. With new improved products coming out every 6 months, Apple has definilty found the way to sell what it wants. Now this is different in other countries like Russia or Japan and even Europe, the phone doesnt sell as much as in the US and even mac computers are not as used over there. Maybe everyone exept America has found that Apple is not the god of gadgets, and that there are better alternatives.
The Iphone though has sold like crazy and the App store is what to thank. Having just delivered 1 Billion downloads from it, it has definitly made the Iphone a popular device. Many companies now are opening up app stores for their platform. Nokia just released its app store called Ovi store which will let Symbian users download apps over the air like the Apple app store. You can even download specific apps based on your location. This is a nice feature but will probably effect only a small amount of apps. And even Ovi has a long way to go to even compete with Apple, but Symbian is the most used mobile platform in the world so they might have a chance to catch up.
The Samsung i8910 runs on Symbian which means that the Ovi store does run on it and you are able to download apps when connected to the internet. Samsung has also built its own app store but there is still some work to be done to make it fully functional (link).
So leta��s talk about the differences between the Samsung i8910 and the Iphone 3G S. One is made by Apple and the other by Samsung. Samsung has been making phones a lot longer then Apple and thus has more experience and knowledge with what people want. Apple has to but they are still a little behind.

Conclusion:
As you can see the Iphone still has a long way to start competing with European and Asian phones. The i8910 is better, cheaper at $650 unlocked which means that you can use it with T-Mobile and At&t. The only thing that I prefer over the i8910 is the fact that Iphone has multitouch and the app store. But in almost every other feature, the Samsung Omnia HD takes it away by a mile.

Computers, Engineers Find New Ways to Keep Tabs On Us
First there were security cameras, sprouting like mushrooms on street corners and buildings. Then came shopper cards, offering discounts in exchange for details about buying habits.
In recent years, we've seen the emergence of electronic tags or "cookies" on the Internet, software that monitors e-mail, GPS devices that pinpoint our position on the planet, and a growing number of machines that capture fingerprints and face prints.
Now comes the news that federal regulators approved the injection of microchips under the skin, enabling physicians with the right gear to know who someone is without having to ask. And yesterday, the omniscient-seeming search engine Google bested itself by announcing a service to probe for information both online and in your own machine. One company official called it a "photographic memory for your computer."
Google says no personal information will be sent back to the company. But if it feels like you can't do anything these days without someone looking over your shoulder, you're not just paranoid. Cheap computers, blazing fast networks and clever engineers are finding more and more ways to keep tabs on where you go and what you buy, generally with your permission. They're even getting better at guessing what you'll do next.
"It's this whole new world. It's sort of like all these little details about our lives are being recorded," said Richard M. Smith, an Internet security consultant in Boston. "We love the conveniences. We love the services. But people kind of instinctively know there's a dark side to this. They just hope it won't happen to them."
Smaller, Faster and Cheaper
To be sure, companies have long gathered personal and shopping information to better market to customers, often with dubious results. Who hasn't received junk mail or telemarketing calls that seem to have no connection with their lives? But those initiatives are fast improving' and accelerating as people live more of their lives tethered to cell phones, the Internet and the rest of the wired world, where trading off personal information is part of the price of admission.
Think about a typical day. An advertising service is notified when you check the sports scores on the Web. The EZ-Pass transponder signals when you go through a tollbooth. The pharmacy collects personal medication details and sends them along to data companies for analysis. At work, some employees now use face recognition systems to get in to their offices, or they type on machines that trace every keystroke.
"Every move you make is becoming part of your permanent record," said Peter P. Swire, a privacy expert and law professor at Ohio State University. "The trend is smaller, faster, cheaper."
Rapid Accumulation
There's no question the data are accumulating, and faster than many people understand. A few years ago, researchers at the University of California at Berkeley estimated that all the information created by humanity by 1999 would double by about now. One of the leading aggregators of personal information, an Arkansas company called Acxiom Corp., has roughly a million times more information about adult Americans and their families than when it first sold stock two decades ago.
Other commercial information services routinely tout their ability to access some 20 billion records. And that's not counting the digital details that come in the form of photographs, videotapes and sensor readings. Most people know companies can mine credit card data, loan records and other transactions. But few know that companies already offer video-mining services as well. One day we might be able to mine the information generated by radio frequency identification chip implanted in our arms. Or we might just use a Google search service custom-made for RFID, as the chips are known.
Not everybody is vexed by these trends. Homeland security, law enforcement and intelligence officials are rushing to take advantage of this wealth of information to protect the country. Web sites like Amazon.com, cell phone services, catalogue retailers, financial services companies and many others are increasingly adept at using data systems to serve customers. Ask people whether they'd give up those services, and many would offer a resounding "no."
David Brin, an author and futurist, believes that recent technological developments have revolutionized the ability of people to see, through cameras around the globe, and remember details through almost unimaginably rich warehouses of information that serve as proxies for our limited memories.

I know about N97 but what i am trying to say about a cell phone that will be superior to use between those two.
I am greatly disappointed. I bought the 3G, at launch, for it's GPS ability. At that time, TomTom, along with other companies, announced they would soon be releasing turn-by-turn software for the phone. Well, it's been a year and some stupid developer agreement for the iPhone SDK restricting GPS software. So why have a GPS chip on the iPhone 3G?! Anyways, back to the real question. Will the iPhone 3G ever get turn-by-turn nagivation software? Should I wait it out or just get smart phone with GPS and GPS software that's already available?

It is the 24th time since 1972 that the adjustment has been made by the Paris based International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service at intervals varying from six months to seven years. The last was in 2005.
Historically, time was based on the rotation of the Earth relative to celestial bodies.
Earth's trip around the sun is about 365.2422 days long, which we round down to 365. Every four years, during a leap year, the inaccuracy is corrected by adding a day in February.
Mechanisms such as the Internet-based Network Time Protocol and the satellite-based Global Positioning System (GPS) depend on the accurate time kept by atomic clocks.
That extra second will make 2008 a�� already long with an extra day on Feb 29 a�� the longest year since 1992.
The decision to add an extra second was made by an international consortium of timekeepers, whose American arm announced the extension.

She went as far as to buy a mini van so it seats her 4 children, my baby and me. She's going to buy another car but she's keeping the mini van so that she can still take us everywhere with her!!!
It all started when my husband and I lived with her last year. She invited us to go to Steve and Barry's with her because it just opened and she didn't know how to get there so my husband drove and got us there in one piece. We since moved out of her place (almost a year ago) and she has invited us to the water park, fair, and aquarium. She has off two weekends per month and in my opinion, she should be using those days to clean the house and get the kids ready for school. Instead, she goes out with her boyfriend Saturday morning, calls us up by 1 pm and invites us somewhere or announces that she's bringing her kids over around dinner time.
I spoke with my husband about these frequent invitations and said that he's going to need to say something before she drives me insane. He said that he's just going to keep telling her we can't go and making excuses. The last place she invited us to is the fair. We didn't have to extra money because my husband's business is slow righ tnow so he told his mom that we're broke and can't go. How embarassing and none of her business! I wish he would just end this now and just tell her we have our own lives and our own family (we have a 10 month old baby!) to attend to.
I don't know if we're "supposed" to go with her out of pitty or if she's trying to manipulate us. She made comments on how we blow our money and how much of a waste it is to buy a GPS for the car. Well, every time she invites us somewhere, she has us bring the GPS because she doesn't 'have one and she has no idea where she's going! So this hypocritical monster in law is on my nerves!!! But how do I get through to these kids that I am not going to be responsible for buying stuff and I do not want to be a convienient babysitter? I have a full-time job and 7 year as well. I offered to pay half for a whole set of good used baby furniture someone was selling in our area for $250, I saw it and it was all great stuff, clean and safe, but they turned their noses up at it, because it "wasn't new".. Like they can afford to be so picky...
I really wish they would save money, she works too, they can do it, I try to tell them, but I really don't want to hear the whining when they get hit with reality after the baby is born... Why won't they listen to me?

I am considering upgrading to a Garmen NUVI 260 model as it announces the street names and I feel this is a safety feature that will pay for itself. It cost $100 more than the TomTom XL model I currently have. Is the extra money worht it?
I was driving an isolated mountain road near Zion National Park and my Tom Tom gps told me to make a right turn 100 feet ahead, that would have taken me flying off a killer of a cliff. Thank the lord it was day light. Maybe I could sue them. It was an English lady announcing the driving prompts, maybe she doesn't like Americans.
I understand that they're trying to bring a new sport to the masses. But seriously, some of the announcing yesterday was just stupid.

"NASA TECHNOLOGY!!!" about 4 times, for such thrilling stuff as kevlar inserts in armor and carbon disk brakes, which are both old news.
"Motorcycles accelerate quickly because they weigh less than cars."
Is that kind of stuff necessary? How about something about the riders? Tell people Rossi won 5 GPs in a row, or how Hayden and Pedrosa have issues. Something interesting, even to the noobie?
I'm looking at two Garmin models-one announces just the turns ("turn left") while the other will actually say the name of the street ("turn left on Elm street"). The latter model costs about 90-100 dollars more. For anyone who owns one, is the extra money worth it? I've had phones with voice caller ID, and frankly the software sucked- I couldn't understand what it was saying half the time. Is this true with the GPS as well?
